Thing 6 Browsers – bookmarks

Just successfully imported my bookmarks from IE to Chrome, so simple and quick especially since there are so many of them!  It hadn’t actually occurred to me to do this previously but now I have yet again I realise how much time it will save me.

I do like Chrome as a browser, possibly because it is the one I use most at home and am therefore most comfortable with.  However for work I have to stick to IE mainly but I’ve got some useful short cuts I can use here too now.

Thing 6 Browsers

I only really use IE and Chrome though I have recently started to use Safari too.  For this ‘Thing’ I enjoyed finding out about cycling through tabs, dragging them out to create new windows and dropping them back in place again.  This is all really useful stuff as I already use keyboard short cuts to cycle through open windows on my desktop and had wondered how to cycle through browser tabs in a similar way.  So this is definitely something I will be using.  Also I found out how to reopen a tab I had just closed which will be invaluable – how many times have I accidentally closed a tab, or thought I had finished with one only to discover I forgot to get some vital piece of info and had to spend ages retracing my steps.  Next stop bookmarking – and I’m sure I’ll pick up more good tips from this section too.

Things 3, 4 and 5 Blogs

So this is where I started to struggle due to slight ‘technical difficulties’ – however I have a secret weapon (Beverley who is jointly responsible for this 19 Things programme sits next to me and suggested I try using a Chrome browser to set up the blog). Once I finally sat down and dedicated some time to working on this (today)  I sailed through getting my blog set up etc and am even enjoying having an opportunity to ramble on about what I have been doing and how it is going, tho’ perhaps I need to put in a little more reflection…I still haven’t really got to grips with what my blog looks like and how to navigate, but I suppose as I have just created it and started to post in order to catch up I need to take some more time to explore it.  Perhaps I will get some feedback from others, assuming I have actually made it publically available – I might have to go and investigate that now actually!

Thing 2 QR codes

I have created QR codes before in a previous job, so these aren’t new to me, but finding out about different websites to use is always useful.  We used the QR codes to help advertise our current e-journals, producing and displaying laminated sheets with the journal info and QR codes on.  The codes link to the current issue of the journal, the idea being that people see the laminated sheet in the current journals display and just scan the code to access the current issue.  It’s a great idea which we borrowed (with permission) from a neighbouring library.

There are lots of other good uses for these codes and it’s just so simple to create them so I guess I’ll be looking for some further opportunities to use them.

Thing 1 – Wordle

Fab! This ‘Thing’ arrived with perfect timing, I needed to create some publicity for my new role as Clinical Librarian and wanted to create a graphic to break up the boring text I was coming up with.

It was so simple I just cut and pasted the the text from an information leaflet into Wordle and let it do the work.  I realised I would need to make some terms into phrases and easily found the instructions on how to do this (which I can’t remember now as it’s taken me so long to get the blog going, but I know it was simple to find and do).  I got Wordle to display several layouts until I found one I was happy with.  Great to be able to complete my 19 Things challenge and to have the practical application altogether, am really quite pleased with myself!

My first Blog post

Hooray I have finally arrived!  After sever attempts and being hampered by technical difficulties I have finally got my blog going (I think!).  So time to get posting and reflecting on my 19 Things, which is the purpose of my blog and a great ‘gentle introduction’ to getting me bloging.
